Capoeira – Sport of an Angel (Victoria’s Secret)

What is this activity that can give you the body of a Victoria Secret Angel?  Capoeira is a mixture of gymnastic movements called floreio which includes backflips, cartwheels, handstands. Then there are the movements of capoeria, the main stance is the ginga , a swaying, dance-like movement, that is a constant movement. And where it’s considered a martial art, there are no true blocks in capoeira; attacks are avoided with escape movements which is why the gymnastics and stances are important.

Music plays an important role the main instrument, the berimbau, sets the pace. A fast rhythm means throwing rapid kicks and flips, a slow rhythm focuses more on trickery and control.  Rather than hardcore punch the hardest, the combination of the movements focuses on a more elegant martial art that requires honing intricate movements as oppose to strength. And that’s why the health benefits of this ‘game’ (not referred to as a sport) are quite incredible:

  • Strength: Capoeiristas are always moving around on their hands in handstands, rolls, and poses that make a drastic improvement on upper body strength. Performing jumping kicks and movements also improve leg strength.
  • Flexibility: Some capoeiristas are on par with yoga practitioners in terms of their flexibility.
  • Cardio and Stamina: Intense capoeira games can require enormous amounts of energy. This, combined with constant repetition of movements and techniques, makes capoeira a valuable cardio exercise.
  • Overall Fitness: Capoeira will improve your strength, flexibility, and stamina, thus improving your overall fitness. It may take a while to become fit, but once you start to take capoeira seriously you can become the picture of health.
